Double bass is the name used for the largest instrument in the bowed stringed family, and originated in 1530 in Europe. Also called contra bass and upright bass, it is very versatile, used in orchestra, jazz bands, bluegrass, country and pop. It plays the bass line in all these ensembles and can be played with or without a bow.


Learning to play the double bass

Lessons are taught in groups or individually. Students need to develop good intonation, through singing tones on their instrument and develop a good relaxed posture. Practice is important to enjoy this instrument, with short, regular sessions the key to good learning and progress.

  • Is it the right instrument for me?

    The double bass can be played form the age of eight. It is an instrument for those are happy with mainly bass lines, but some melodies are on offer. It is an instrument that does change your life, in particular in transporting a very large instrument! It takes strength in body, mind and fingers. However if you want to be the most important part of any ensemble, (everyone hears you first and everyone has to tune to you!) then this might be the instrument for you
