Piano/keyboard

The piano is an acoustic stringed instrument; the strings are struck by hammers as the keys are pressed. The piano is usually played as a solo instrument, and composers through the ages have embraced its versatility and range. It is also used as an accompanying instrument, so pianists are always in demand! The keyboard is an electronic instrument, most often played in a group or band. It can also recreate the sound of a piano to an extent, and so can be suitable for beginner pianists to learn on.

Learning to play the piano or keyboard

Lessons usually take place individually or in pairs. A general piano/keyboard syllabus is taught at the beginning, so students develop the correct posture and technique at the keyboard, using both hands to play. Playing keyboard allows you to play tunes with simple accompaniments, but doesn’t involve the same level of technique as playing the piano. Piano students will move on to playing different repertoire in a wide range of musical styles.

  • Is it the right instrument for me?

The piano is a versatile instrument, usually played solo, but also in groups or to accompany instrumentalists/singers. A keyboard can be a useful starter instrument to try before moving on to the piano. Or, if you want to be part of a band and play your favourite songs, keyboard is an ideal option
