Music in picture: Create a Class Graphic Score!

This activity works well as a starter for a composing lesson or a music appreciation lesson in KS1. It’s ideal for this key stage because it’s an easy and accessible activity that all children can participate in and contribute to. It’s also a quick activity that encourages the children to engage with the music in a creative way whilst sensibly listening.

Equipment Needed:

  • 3 whiteboards
  • 3 whiteboard pens
  • Listening piece

How to get started:

Arrange the class in 3 rows of 10. While listening to a set piece of music , ask the children to draw 2 graphic score symbol or picture on the board that comes to their mind as they listen. As the boards are passed down the row, each child will build on the ideas of the previous one. By the time the board reaches the end of the row, each group will have created a graphic score related to the music.

Pitfalls:

Give the children a 15-second change board cue so they don’t spend too long on the board and do pass it down

Happy graphic score making!
